Muscle Shoals completed the 2016 season with a 7-6 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Trojans earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Muscle Shoals lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Austin team by a score of 27-21. The Trojans lost as many games as in any season since 2008. The Trojans had some tough luck last season as five of their six losses were by less than eight points. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Muscle Shoals has gone a combined 71-18. Their 80.0% winning percentage ranks 3rd in Class 6A over the past seven seasons. Over the past 25 seasons, Muscle Shoals has managed to compile a record of 148-137. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 6A and 170th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2008. The Trojans are led by head coach Scott Basden who is entering his tenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 82-29 over the past nine seasons at Muscle Shoals. Under his direction the Trojans have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times. They have won four region crowns with Coach Basden. Coach Basden's overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 151-58 (72.2%). His 151 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Basden's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won seven region championships. Coach Basden won a state championship at in 2007. The Muscle Shoals Trojans will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2017 season. While most teams rebuild during the off season, Muscle Shoals has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Trojans will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region eight this season. They have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2008 and are hopeful to continue that streak in 2017. Senior Carlos Davis returns after rushing for 1514 yards on 236 carries while scoring 10 touchdowns. Also returning is Senior Caleb Willis who ran for 633 yards on 106 carries and scored 10 touchdowns. The Trojans open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Gardendale on Friday, August 25 at Driver Stadium. Last year the Gardendale Rockets finished with an overall record of 8-4 and in second place in Class 6A region six. The Rockets lost in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs to Muscle Shoals by a score of 17-13. Muscle Shoals and Gardendale have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Trojans have a 5-1-0 record against the Rockets. They last met in 2016 with Muscle Shoals winning by a score of 17-13. Muscle Shoals returns 6A All-State Senior running back Carlos Davis.
